Since this is the first time we’re chatting in 2020, let me start off by saying hello and happy New Year—I hope you’re looking forward to a brand new decade of exploring with me. And what better way to really kick things off than by talking goals.
In this new year, there are so many things that I want to accomplish but at the top of my list is being better to myself mentally and physically. With that in mind, I’m making a short run down of my favorite places and things that bring me joy and help achieve mental and physical fitness. The reason why I’ve titled this post what I have is because I’m a true believer that January is the hardest month to maintain goals, resolutions…whatever you want to call it. Let’s just label it a trial month and move on, shall we?
Smarter Eating
I am the king of “treat yourself” but when it comes to reminding myself that mindfulness is important when doing so, I’m lacking restraint. With great resources out there like Alex The Defined Dish cookbook to guide weeknight meals, it’s simply knowing what kind of balance you want to maintain in your eating regimen. Lately, I’ve also been crushing on Bright Box Foods, a service from acclaimed chef Chris Patrick that brings chef-prepared meals to those of us with dietary restrictions (hello, Whole30) and needs. So whether you’re getting your healthy(ish) meals delivered or cooking some great new recipes, just know you have options.
The Routine Rut
Wake up, hit snooze, drag yourself out of bed and to another zombie-like gym session that leaves you longing for excitement. Sound familiar? I know it all too well and when setting fitness goals for yourself, my first tip is rebuke the routine. Yes I think that it’s possible to stick to the same regimen over and over, but for someone like me, it gets old. That’s why I seek to switch things up and try out new classes and workouts that make me excited to rise in the morning and crush it by night. I am a fan of Kelly’s class at Barry’s Bootcamp where motivation meets music. You’ll often catch me sweating in whatever workout Dallas fitness fiend Thomas Renner is teaching. Lastly, I dig the “donation based” goodness that Black Swan Yoga dishes up. Again, keep it fun and don’t be afraid to shake up your routine in fit February.
Mindful Moments
I do my best thinking while drinking (coffee). It’s no surprise some of my best A-ha moments occur when I’m able to quiet the rush of the world and center my focus on the meaningful tasks ahead. I recently picked up a copy of this book and while affirmations have been called cheesy, I’ll get my positive ju-ju wherever I can find it. Another beautiful way to stay present is investing in your self through bullet journaling. Oh what a difference this has made for clearing through the noise and compelling your thoughts to be a vessel of creativity and productivity. Find a cafe or quiet corner of your house to really channel your inner champ and remind yourself that the best medicine can be some well-earned “me time”.
So there you have it, my three main categories of “fitness” headed into February. This list is certainly not all-encompassing and when it comes to taking care of yourself, there are so many ways to manage. I hope some of these strike home for you, and please always feel free to share the ways in which you set out to meet your goals.
